Pigs

Wild Boar crossed with Berkshire, these colorful and bristly little pigs are well adapted to the cool climate of the Chilcotin.

Their young are usually born March/April and stay with the mothers for about 6-8 weeks before they are weaned. During this time it doesn't take them long, maybe 3-6 hours and they are up and running already. They start using their noses to dig in everything they find at already 2 weeks old. Then, once the grass starts growing, they are electrically fenced in sections on a large fields. They first graze the grass off the top, after which they start digging to eat the roots. The perfect field ploughs! Their growing is supplemented with organic grains or peas.

In the fall they really enjoy the extra greens that are left over after harvesting on the market garden.

During the winter months, the mothers are kept in a large pen with a wood-frame shed and Deep Litter in it where they can burrow when it gets cold out.
